✦ zenith calendar · the anglican (england) almanac

the church of england's year, on the ring of your own.

the principal feasts, holy days and festivals in one quiet layer of your sky, each one explained in the church's own words.

anglican (england) is one of the holiday almanacs that come with zenith calendar. it holds the church of england's principal feasts, principal holy days and festivals, as the church's own calendar and its rules for ordering the christian year set them.

its dates are copied from the church's published calendar and rules, not worked out on your phone: where a festival must move off a sunday or out of holy week and easter week, the date here is the moved one. tap a day and read three short paragraphs: what it is, where it comes from, and how it is kept.

gregorian · the christian year, with easter from the church's own table

a few of its days

the first sunday of advent

a sunday, beginning the weeks of advent

what it is

the first day of the church's year and of advent, the weeks of waiting and preparing for christ: toward his birth at christmas and his coming again in glory.

how it is kept

churches turn purple, or in some places blue, and the first candle of the advent wreath is lit. many hold an advent carol service that moves from darkness into candlelight, and homes open the first window of the advent calendar.

christmas day

25 december

what it is

the feast of the birth of jesus christ, the son of god made man, and a principal feast. it begins the twelve days of christmas, which run to the epiphany.

how it is kept

parishes celebrate holy communion through the night and the morning, with carols. the crib stands in church and home, and families give gifts and share the christmas dinner.

easter day

a sunday, from the church's own easter table

what it is

the day of the resurrection, a principal feast and the greatest feast of the christian year: christ, who died on the cross, is risen from the dead.

how it is kept

the alleluia, silent through lent, returns, and the greeting rings out: "alleluia. christ is risen." "he is risen indeed. alleluia." churches are filled with flowers, families share easter eggs and an easter meal, and easter is kept for fifty days, until pentecost.

pentecost (whit sunday)

whit sunday

the fiftieth day of easter

what it is

a principal feast, when the holy spirit came down on the apostles. it is called the birthday of the church.

how it is kept

churches are dressed in red for the fire of the spirit, and it has long been a day for baptism. in parts of the north of england churches still hold whit walks with banners and bands, and the easter season ends this day.

✦ zenith calendar · the sky around it

and the sky those days live in is worth staying for.

anglican (england) is a single layer. beneath it is a whole calendar drawn as the sky, your year an orbit round the sun, and every part of it answers your touch.

your year, an orbit

the sun stands at the centre and the year rings round it, with today's earth riding at today's place, its small moon beside it. tap the ring anywhere else and a faint ghost earth waits on that day.

run a finger round the year

drag along the ring and the days pass under your finger, the big date and the day's list following as you go. lift, and the day you stopped on stays picked.

a week under its moon

tap the small moon beside today's earth and you dive into the week. the moon above shows its phase, named underneath; swipe the dates and each week brings its own.

the sun and the moon are doors

tap the sun and the ring tips on its edge into a ladder of years. in the week, pull the moon firmly down and the month opens, the moon resting half off its foot.

it keeps to itself

zenith calendar has no server of its own. tap the gear and switch on "nothing comes in" or "nothing leaves this phone"; lift them, and every almanac is back exactly as it was.

anglican (england) is waiting in the app, and the rest of the sky comes with it.
