what it is

the tibetan new year, when the old year is let go and the new one met with prayer, offerings and family. the days that follow are among the most joyful of the year.

how it is kept

homes are cleaned and khapse pastries made before the day; on losar morning the shrine is given fresh offerings, people greet one another with "tashi delek", new prayer flags go up and juniper is burned as incense.

what it is

the day of miracles, which closes the days of miracles that open the year. the tradition teaches that the fruit of every act is multiplied many millions of times today.

how it is kept

people make offerings, recite prayers and sutras, give to others and take care to do no harm. butter lamps are lit everywhere, and in lhasa and many monasteries great sculptures of butter are made and lit on the night of the full moon.

tap the sun and the ring tips on its edge into a ladder of years. in the week, pull the moon firmly down and the month opens, the moon resting half off its foot.

it keeps to itself

zenith calendar has no server of its own. tap the gear and switch on "nothing comes in" or "nothing leaves this phone"; lift them, and every almanac is back exactly as it was.

how to get it

  1. on a new install, the first page is "your starting sky": which almanacs start lit.
  2. under "faiths", tap "buddhist reckonings" to open that line.
  3. switch on "buddhist (tibet)" (its mark is ༀ) and tap "· begin ·". it is lit from the start.
  4. already past the first page? buddhist (tibet) waits, whole, in the archive. on the sky, hold the "almanacs" book in the bottom-right corner to open the binder.
  5. tap "▣" in the binder's bottom-left corner to turn to the archive, and tap "buddhist (tibet)" once to choose it.
  6. tap "unlock" (the padlock) at the foot, then "▥ put back".
  7. it comes back eclipsed: tap the "almanacs" book on the sky and tap the "buddhist (tibet)" chip, or choose it in the binder and tap "● shine". you can lock it again whenever you like.
