The journal

The journal is a plain page of written entries — about a commitment (anything on your calendar), about a day, or about nothing in particular. All three are kept the same way.

Where it is. Settings › the journal ("what you wrote, and the day you wrote it about") opens the whole list. The row has no settings of its own, and leaving the journal returns you to settings. Other ways in:

• a day's brief — the list of that day's commitments along the bottom of the screen — › "✎ write about this day", or a title already written there, opens that day's page;
• a commitment's "⊕ expand" › "✎ write about this";
• hold ✛ › "✎ a journal entry";
• a Zenith link to one entry opens it.

#The page

The page is titled "the journal". The line under the title tells you where you are: how many entries there are, the day you are looking at, "editing an entry", or, while writing, "a new entry · ‹day› ▾ change". Tap "▾ change" to choose the day the entry is filed on.

The list. Each row shows its day, its title and one line — what it is about, "written afterwards", or its last words. An empty day says "nothing written about this day yet". Below the list are "· write one ·" and "· close ·".

On the whole list only:

• "· save the volume ·" saves the whole journal as one file, zenith-journal.zjv.
• "clear the history" asks twice. The list empties, but every entry's file is kept.
• "delete every entry file" asks twice. Every entry is gone for good.

If some entries could not be read, or were cleared from the list, the page says how many, and that their files are still in the journal folder.

#Write an entry

Fill in "what to call it" and "what happened". "· keep ·" needs at least one of them; "· leave it ·" drops the entry. An entry about a commitment already knows the commitment and its almanac — one of your calendars, a named, coloured layer of commitments. After you keep it, you see "kept in the journal".

#Read an entry

• The title and its about-line. An edited entry shows how many earlier versions it has, with "read them" to see every earlier version and when it was saved.
• Its words, block by block — including blocks written by other Zenith apps.
• "tied to" lists links to other apps' items. Tap one to open it; if that app is missing, it says so.
• "· edit ·" keeps the words it had as an earlier version first. "· back ·" returns to the list.
• "· send to mind ·" appears only when Zenith Mind is installed. It hands Mind the title, every block and a link back.
• "· forget it ·" asks twice, like every delete. The first tap turns it to "· sure? this is gone ·"; the second forgets the entry and deletes its file. Left alone for a few seconds, it turns back.

#Files and limits

• Each entry is its own .zje file on the phone. Older .zjd files are still read, and renamed the next time they are saved.
• The journal writes files but never takes entries in. A journal file opened from outside is refused: journals are opened by the app that wrote them.
• The journal is not in a backup. Save the volume if you want a copy.
• The assistant can write, read and forget entries.
