Stars, nodes & regions

Explanation
annotatedA grid editor showing region dividers and labels.Screenshot coming soon
The editor where you set how many regions the sky has and where they divide.

Everything you place on the sky — your home screen — is a star: an app, folder, or shortcut, drawn as a point of light. Stars are what you reach for, and regions are how you keep them tidy.

A star is anything you can place

Under the light, every star is the same kind of thing, so they all behave alike — you place them, move them, and open them the same way. What changes is what a star points at. A star can be:

  • an app you launch,
  • a folder that holds its own ring of stars,
  • a widget floated in its own window,
  • a shortcut an app publishes,
  • a system action, like locking the screen,
  • a file it opens by its type,
  • or a link to a web page or deep link.

You rarely pick the kind by name. You choose it by how you add the star — an app from the app list, a link by pasting a URL — and Zenith sorts out the rest. Because every star shares one underlying form, a folder can hold a ring, and any star can carry your own icon, color, or name.

Where a star sits: angle and orbit

A star has a place on its ring: an angle around the circle and an orbit — how far out from the center it sits. The center of a ring is its closest reach; farther orbits ripple outward. You set both by dragging the star, so the layout is yours to arrange, not fixed to a grid.

Your most-used stars can also shine brighter than the rest, so the sky slowly comes to reflect what you actually reach for. That's an option you turn on; it's covered in Skies, usage-as-light & list mode.

Regions: zones of the sky

A region is a zone of the sky that groups stars, like a page or a category. Each region keeps its own ring, so holding in one region brings up one set of apps and holding in another brings up a different set — work in one place, play in another.

The sky can hold up to nine regions, but it starts with one. Adding more regions is part of Zenith Gold (Gold); the free sky uses a single region. Which region a hold opens depends on where on the sky your finger lands, and you can set the count and the dividers in Settings › regions & star index.

Stars, then, are the things you place; regions are the zones you place them in; and the ring is how both come to your finger — which is the next page.
