Closed, put away, locked, burnt & hidden

Explanation

A journal can be finished, set aside, locked or thrown away. These are different things, and the app never swaps one for another. An entry can also be hidden.

The journal's states

statewhat it meansstill in the sky?takes new entries?how back

put awayin the reliquary — the shelf that keeps things whole, out of sightnono"set it out"
lockedsealed behind a passphrase you chooseno, until openedno, until opened"open it", with the passphrase

A journal can be closed and locked at once; closing never changes a lock, the reliquary or the burn pile.

When a journal takes nothing new

Every way of filing asks the same question first. A journal that is closed, put away or locked refuses in one line, and nothing is filed:

  • "this journal is closed — reopen it to add anything"
  • "this journal is put away — set it out to add anything"
  • "this journal is locked — open it to add anything"

That holds for compose's journal chips, "file in…" in the orbits, dragging onto a planet, "✛ add an entry" in a journal's menu, the escritoire's "✛ an entry", and gravity. See File entries in & out.

  • Connecting two stars passes such a journal over. Only if every journal that would grow refuses is nothing joined, and the line says why. When two constellations meet, a way that would add to such a journal isn't offered, and a locked journal is never merged.
  • Bringing in a journal file adds nothing new to such a journal you already have. "brought in · …" ends with why — for example "· “the garden year” is closed, so 1 new entry stayed out". See Bring in a file or words.

An entry's states

  • Put away — an entry can go to the reliquary too. It leaves the sky and the list, and stays in its journals.
  • On the burn pile — it leaves the sky, the list and its journals, and waits thirty days.
  • Hidden — it stays in the sky, the list and its journals, and is kept out of insights, the widget, notices, ask the sky and the shuttle. See Hide an entry.

Hidden is not locked, and not put away.
