Scrubbing the ring & spinning time

How-to
Run a finger along the year ring: each day it passes is picked, and its fan opens.
Hold today's earth and carry it round the orbit: each loop rolls the calendar a year.

Two gestures on the year view let you move through time without lifting your finger. Scrubbing the ring reads the days of the year you are on. The time spin rolls the calendar from one year to another. Nothing on screen mentions either, so here is how.

Both happen on the year view — the whole year drawn as a great ring round the sun. See The year & the years.

Scrub the ring through the days

  1. On the year view, put your finger on or close to the great ring. You can also hold the ring: that takes the day under your finger straight away.
  2. Run your finger along the ring. The angle of your finger is the date, so each day of the year is picked in turn.
  3. Feel for the months. Each change of month plays a note and a small bump.
  4. Stop on a day. Its fan opens — that day's commitments, spread out toward the sun.
  5. Lift your finger. The day you left stays open.

The ring scrub never changes the year. It only moves within the year you are looking at. To change year, use the time spin below.

Sweep into the fan

You can read a day's commitments without lifting your finger.

  1. Scrub the ring to a day, as above.
  2. Keep your finger down and move it inward, toward the sun. About a quarter of the way in from the ring toward the sun, your finger stops choosing days.
  3. Sweep across the open fan. The nearest commitment lights, with a bump and a note.
  4. Lift your finger. The day stays open.
  5. Tap a commitment in the fan to open its page. See A commitment's page.

Spin time to another year

The time spin is the only gesture that moves the year.

  1. Make sure you are on the real current year, so today's live earth is showing — the bright earth with its moon, not the faint ghost earth at another day. The spin only starts from the live earth.
  2. Hold that earth. A pale ring of light opens and a falling run of notes plays. The earth in your hand becomes a full glowing body, with no moon beside it.
  3. Carry it round the orbit. Each full loop rolls the calendar one year forward or back.
  4. Keep going for more years. The loops add up rather than wrapping round, and each change of year plays a tick and a small tilt.
  5. Lift your finger. The day you finished on stays picked.

The spin reaches from 1900 to 2200 — or from 1900 to 2100 while a calendar system other than gregorian is chosen. See Calendar systems & names.

Leaving the year view also ends a spin.

To come back to this year, tap the ringed dot ◉, "today", in the bottom-right column, or tap the big date in the top-left corner.

If a gesture does something else

  • A second finger ends any scrub. Two fingers pinch and pan the view instead.
  • Holding on the year never adds a commitment. Holding the earth spins time and holding the ring scrubs it. To add, tap the cross ✛ in the bottom-left corner. See Add a commitment.
  • Dragging through open sky, away from the ring, reads the bodies you pass instead of the ring. The nearest one picks its whole day.
  • The fan stays shut on an empty day. A day with nothing on it never fans, and so never sounds.
