Save & earlier versions
Saving keeps what compose holds and keeps the earlier words in the entry's history. You can bring any earlier version back.
Save
Any of these saves:
- tap "save" in compose;
- leave compose with "‹ compose" or back;
- leave the app any other way — home, the app switcher, a call.
What it says:
| when | the line |
|---|---|
| the entry had words before | "saved · the earlier words are kept in its history" |
| it had none | "saved" |
| you left compose | "saved" |
| you left a new entry the sky would have hidden | "saved · loose stars are back on the sky", or "saved · “name” back on the sky" for a switched-off journal its gravity filed it into — with "undo". See Journals on the sky |
| nothing changed | "nothing has changed" |
A new entry with nothing in it is never saved. A place alone, or an extra header's value alone, counts as a change.
An entry in a locked journal is saved sealed. If its journal isn't open this session, it isn't saved, and you see "that didn't save — the journal keeps the last good copy".
What a save keeps
The title, the words, the pages, the files, the tags, the pop-ups, the place and the extra headers' values. Tags are trimmed, lowercased and kept once each. A file you removed goes now, unless an earlier version still uses it.
The filed day, the star, the colour, the journals and the ties don't wait for a save — they are kept the moment you change them. Putting a brand-new entry in a journal, or tying it, keeps it first; an entry already kept is filed or tied without saving its words, tags, pop-ups, place or extra headers, which still wait for "save".
Earlier versions
Every save keeps the words as they were as an earlier version. An entry that was empty keeps none. A design or a life you save by hand, in design or bring to life, keeps what the entry was as an earlier version the same way, when it changed something.
A row's "v<n>" counts the states an entry has had: "v4" means three earlier versions are kept.
Bring one back
- In compose, tap "edited · one earlier version" — or "edited · n earlier versions". The history opens under it, newest first, and the line reads "hide the history".
- Each version shows its day and time, "edited in <app>" when another app made it, and its title or "untitled".
- Tap one to open it — its words (or "no words"), its tags and its file names.
- Tap "bring this back".
Anything you typed and didn't save is saved first. Then the version's title, pages, tags and files become current, and what the entry said a moment ago becomes a new version. The line says "brought back · what it replaced is kept in the history".
Pop-ups, the place, the star, the colour and the filed day are not part of a version and stay as they are.
To undo it, bring back the version you just replaced — it is now the newest in the history.
Reading versions
In the reader, "edited · n earlier versions · read them" shows them newest first, with "edited in …", to read only — "hide them" folds them. The entry's ⋯ menu line "n earlier versions" opens the reader there. To bring one back, tap "write" and use compose's history.
