Extra headers
A journal can have its own extra headers — fields like "mood" or "rating" that every entry in it shows. Each has a name you pick, a kind of content and a default. They show after the entry's day and place, in the same small style, never as a section of their own. They are free.
Add one
- Open the journal's page and tap ⋯. Under "extra headers" — "every entry in this journal shows these with its day and place. each starts at its default." — tap "✛ add a header".
- Fill in "what to call it".
- Pick one of eight kinds: words, a number, yes / no, a date, a time, a pick from a list, a link, a rating.
- For a pick, write "the choices, separated by ·".
- Set "its default".
- Tap "add it". Until it can be added, the button says why instead: "name it first", "write its choices first", or why the default doesn't fit.
Added, the line says "<name> · on every entry in <journal>". On the journal's ⋯, "its template" comes next — see Gravity & a journal's template (Gold).
Or take one an app fills
Under the maker, "or take one an app fills" offers chips such as "calendar · time" or "tasks · due". Such a header shows what that app sent with an entry — a card sent from Zenith Calendar's "↗ take it elsewhere" › "→ zenith journal", or a task from Zenith Tasks' "📓 journal about this", fills them. See The Journal & Zenith Calendar and The Journal & Zenith Tasks.
Change or remove one
- Change — tap a header to change its name, choices or default, then "keep the changes". Its kind stays, so a value given as a date stays a date.
- Remove — "remove" takes it off the journal. The notice "removed · entries keep what they had" has "undo".
A locked journal that is shut shows its headers and changes none.
Fill them in
In compose, each header is a field right after "where it happened", with its name as the hint.
| kind | how you fill it |
|---|---|
| words, a number, a link | typed, in the same field box as "where it happened". A number or a link gets its own keyboard, with no automatic capital letter |
| yes / no, a pick, a rating | tapped; what shows is lit. Tap your own choice again to take it off |
| a date | the day picker — "that day" / "never mind" — with "clear" |
| a time | the app's own time picker — "that time" / "never mind" — with "clear" |
What shows before you type — the default, or what an app sent — sits in the hint. A value its kind can't take is not kept: a half-typed number waits in the field, and anything else says why. A header changed alone is a change, saved like any other.
What an entry shows
Its own value; else what an app sent; else the default.
In the reader, each header with something in it is one line after the place — "mood · calm", "rating · ★★★★☆". A date reads as a day, and a link opens. An entry in several journals shows every journal's headers, each once.
Nothing is lost
Values live on the entry. When an entry leaves the journal, or a header is removed, they stay on the entry out of sight, and show again when either comes back. Renaming a header keeps them. They go where the entry goes: sealed with it in a locked journal, and kept from ask the sky with it when it is hidden.
Search finds them
Search in the list finds header values, and what an app sent. See Search & narrow the list.
Ask the sky
Ask the sky can list, add, change and remove a journal's extra headers — never a locked journal's — and set what an entry says under one, by the header's name. See What the sky can do — entries & journals.
