Pop-ups

How-to

A pop-up makes some of an entry's words tappable. Tapping them in the reader opens a note, a picture, another entry, a link or a file. Making one is journal gold (Gold); changing and removing one are free, and "reading a pop-up is always free, for anyone you share this with."

Make one (Gold)

  1. Open the entry in compose, on the "words" tab, and select some words.
  2. Tap "✦ pop-up" under the tabs. The selection is kept even though the tap takes the keyboard away.
  3. A sheet rises: "“…” opens…", the words you chose.
  4. Pick the kind — "a note", "a picture", "another entry", "a link" or "a file". The chosen one reads "· a note ·".
  5. If you like, fill in "what to call it (optional)".
  6. Finish by kind:
kindwhat you do
a notewrite in "the note", then "make it"
a linktype "the address", then "make it · " and the address. A bare address gets https:// added; one that isn't an address says "that isn't an address the phone could open."
a picturetap one of the pictures this entry holds. With none: "this entry holds no pictures yet — add one in materials first."
another entrysearch in "find an entry — search its words" and tap one of up to 12 results; this entry is never offered. "nothing matches." when none
a filetap one of this entry's files that isn't a picture. With none: "this entry holds no files other than pictures — add one in materials first."

The notice says the words "now opens" what you chose. Made on words that already open a pop-up, the new one takes their place, and the old one leaves the entry unless other words still open it. Blank words can't hold one: "those words can't hold a pop-up".

  • With nothing selected: "select some words in the entry first, then ✦ pop-up".
  • Without journal gold, "✦ pop-up" opens the Gold sheet instead, with "making pop-ups" first.

Or drag a file onto a word (Gold)

Let a file from the shuttle — the suite's shared tray — go on a word in compose. The file joins the entry and that word becomes a pop-up that opens it: a picture as "a picture", anything else as "a file". The line says "“word” now opens “name”", with "undo", which takes the pop-up and the file back off. Without journal gold the file still joins the entry, and the line says "“name” added to its files — making a pop-up is part of journal gold". See The Shuttle in the Journal.

The pop-ups list

Under the words, "pop-ups" lists each one: its mark (✎ a note, ▣ a picture, ✧ another entry, ↗ a link, ▤ a file), its name, and "on one place in the words" or "on n places in the words".

"change it" (then "done"):

  • its name, for every kind;
  • a note's words, or a link's address — kept exactly as typed;
  • which picture or file it opens — the current one marked "●". With only one: "this entry holds no other picture — add one in materials, and it can be chosen here." (or "no other file");
  • which entry it opens — "opens “<title>”", then "open a different entry — search its words".

A pop-up keeps its kind; a note can't become a link. Every underline stays where it is.

"remove" — the pop-up and every underline that opened it go. The notice says "the pop-up is gone; the words stay", with "undo" — and the "undo" button at the top right, which then offers "redo". See Undo & earlier versions.

Changes and removals are kept with "save", or when you leave compose.

In the reader

Underlined words open the pop-up; the tap has to land on the letters. "what the underlined words open" lists every pop-up as a plain line, for reaching them without aiming. A file opens in the phone's own viewer; "nothing on this phone opens" and its name when no app can. See The reader.

Versions and pop-ups

Pop-ups are not part of an earlier version. Bringing back a version brings back its underlines, but not a removed pop-up, so those words read as plain words.
