The orbits & "file in…"

How-to

The orbits show your journals as a little solar system. Each journal is a planet, its entries are its moons, and entries in no journal circle the sun as meteors, waiting to be filed. It is the place to file by hand. Tap "orbits" in the header to open it.

Only entries still out appear, and only journals still out are planets; a put-away journal is not drawn.

The top

The line reads "the orbits · N circling the sun", "the orbits · everything is filed", or "the orbits · by month · N". Under "journals", while anything circles, it adds "hold an entry and drag it onto a planet to file it."

The sort chips — "journals" and "months". Under "months" each month that holds entries is a planet, newest first, and nothing circles. Changing the sort sends the moons flying to their new planets.

Drag to file

  1. Hold a moon or a meteor. It lifts with a firm buzz, wears a dark disc and a larger ring, and its title rides beside your finger.
  2. Let go:
overwhat happens
a planetit leaves every journal that held it and joins that one: "filed in …", with "undo", which puts it back where it lay, lines and all
the suna dashed ring shows round the sun — "OUT OF EVERY JOURNAL", then "LET GO · OUT OF EVERY JOURNAL" over it. It leaves every journal: "back to the sun · in no journal now"
nothingit drifts back to where it was

A closed or locked journal says why instead, and the entry stays where it was. "undo" also waits in the top-right corner, beside AI and the shuttle, until you leave the orbits. See Undo & earlier versions. Under "months", filing is refused: "sorting by month only shows where entries already are — file them under journals".

"file in…" — file by name

Tap a moon or a meteor. A small menu opens.

  • The head — the entry's title, or "not written yet", and where it is: "in" and its journals' names, or "in no journal — circling the sun".
  • "read it" — opens the reader.
  • "write" — opens compose.
  • "file in…" — one row for every journal out on the desk, the fullest first. A journal that already holds the entry shows "✓ " before its name.
  • Tap a journal without the ✓: the entry is filed in it, at the end — "filed in …", with "undo".
  • Tap a journal with the ✓: the entry is taken out, with its lines there — "taken out of …", with "undo".
  • A journal that takes nothing new says why and files nothing: "this journal is closed — reopen it to add anything" or "this journal is locked — open it to add anything".
  • With no journals: "no journals yet — make one from the book in the corner."
  • "close".

Unlike a drag, "file in…" adds: the entry's other journals are left as they are.

"let them settle" (Gold)

When some meteors are claimed by a journal's gravity — its own rule for which tags belong in it — a dashed line runs from each meteor to that planet, and "let them settle · N" shows under "journals". Only a journal that takes new entries, and is not locked, can claim one. Tap it and each one is filed into the first journal that claims it: "N settled into their journals". Without journal gold it reads "let them settle ✦ gold" and opens the Gold sheet. See Gravity & a journal's template (Gold).

Two fingers

Pinch to bring the orbits in and out, drag to move the system, and twist to turn it.

Motion

Everything turns slowly. A planet grows a little with each moon. With reduce motion on it stands still, and filing still works.
