File entries in & out

How-to

Filing puts an entry into a journal. An entry can lie in as many journals as you like, or in none — then it is loose. Filing never moves or changes the entry itself.

In compose — "its journals"

Open compose, tap "journals & tags", and find "its journals". Every journal still on the desk is a chip, "<its star> <its name>", lit when the entry is in it. A journal put away is not offered.

  • The line above says where the entry lies: "in <names>. an entry can lie in as many as you like.", or "this entry is loose: in no journal at all. that is not a fault — plenty of writing never belongs to anything."
  • Tap a chip to put the entry in, at the end of the journal: "in “<name>”". Tap a lit chip to take it out: "out of “<name>”". Each has "undo".
  • With no journals: "there are no journals yet. the escritoire is where they are made — or join two stars in the sky and they become one."

A tap acts at once. A new entry is saved first, so the journal has something real to point at.

Loose pages

The loose pages shelf lists every entry in no journal. On the escritoire, tap ▣ "shelves" once from the desk, or hold it and pick "loose pages".

  • The title line says "n pages in no journal at all". Empty: "every page is in a journal. a page is loose when nothing holds it — written and never filed, or taken out of the last journal that did."
  • Each row shows the page's star, title (or "not written yet") and day; tap it to read.
  • "file it ▾" opens the desk's journals as chips under the row. Tap one: "“…” is in “…”", with "undo". "never mind" folds them away. With no journals: "no journals on the desk to file it into. make one with ✛ and it will be here."
  • "▤ put away" sends the page to the reliquary: "“…” into the reliquary · it keeps every word", with "undo".

This files a page into one journal; to put it in several, use "its journals" in compose.

Take an entry out

  • The entry's ⋯ menu › "take it out of this journal" — on a journal's page, in the list narrowed to one journal, or from a star's card when exactly one journal holds it.
  • A journal's ⋯ menu › "its entries" › "take out" beside an entry.
  • A lit chip in compose, or a ✓ journal in the orbits' "file in…".
  • Drag it onto the sun in the orbits — out of every journal.

The line says "taken out of <journal's name>", with "undo", which puts it back in the same place with its lines. Taking an entry out also takes away the lines drawn through it in that journal's constellation. The entry itself stays, in the sky and in any other journal.

What it said under that journal's extra headers stays on the entry, out of sight, and shows again if it goes back in.

With journal gold, a journal whose gravity claims the entry's tags may file it again the next time the entry is kept — for example when you change its star. See Gravity & a journal's template (Gold).

When a journal won't take it

A journal that is closed, put away or locked refuses in one line, and nothing is filed: "this journal is closed — reopen it to add anything", "this journal is put away — set it out to add anything" or "this journal is locked — open it to add anything". See Closed, put away, locked, burnt & hidden.

Bringing in a journal file (.zjj) adds nothing new to a journal you already have that is closed, put away or locked. The line after "brought in" says why, such as "· “the garden year” is closed, so 1 new entry stayed out". See Bring in a file or words.

Ask the sky

Ask the sky can file an entry in a journal and take it out again, refusing the same journals with the same words. See What the sky can do — entries & journals.
