Write a new entry

How-to

An entry is one thing you wrote, drawn in the sky as a star. Every way of starting one lands in compose — the one screen where entries are written. See Compose, top to bottom.

The ways in

fromdo thiswhere the new entry lands
the sky, at a spothold an empty part of the sky, then "write it" on its cardon the day you held, at the height you held. See Tap, hold, drag & pinch
the "add" cornertap ✛ ("new entry") in the bottom-left cornerfiled today
the "add" corner, heldhold ✛, then "✛ an entry" — "IN NO JOURNAL · LOOSE IN THE SKY"loose, kept at once
the escritoiretap ✛ ("add an entry, a spoken entry, or a journal"), then "✛ an entry"in the journal whose plate is forward — "IN <JOURNAL NAME> · THE PLATE THAT IS OPEN" — or "IN NO JOURNAL · THE DESK IS BARE"
your voicetap "voice" ("speak an entry") in the bottom-left cornerthe phone's own speech recogniser listens, and what it hears becomes the first page's words. A phone without one says "this phone has no speech recogniser"
a spoken entryhold ✛, or the escritoire's ✛, then "✛ a spoken entry" — "SAY IT NOW · WRITE IT OUT LATER"compose opens on the recorder. See Spoken entries & write it out
the welcome"write something"filed today
outside the appthe "write" shortcut, the "write" quick-settings tile, or ✎ on the widgetfiled today. See Widgets, the tile & shortcuts

Kept now, or kept when it holds something

  • From ✛, the voice corner, the shortcut, the tile, the widget and the welcome, nothing is kept until there is something in it. A new entry left empty is not saved.
  • From the add menus' "✛ an entry" the blank entry is kept at once, so a journal has something real to hold. It shows as "not written yet" until you write.
  • A star placed by holding the sky is kept at once too, as a blank entry.

An entry that holds only a place or an extra header's value is not empty, and is kept.

When a journal won't take it

From the escritoire, if the forward journal is closed, put away or locked, it says why — "this journal is closed — reopen it to add anything", "this journal is put away — set it out to add anything" or "this journal is locked — open it to add anything" — and no entry is made.

A new star never vanishes

If "loose" is switched off on the sky, a new entry in no journal would be hidden the moment it was made. Instead "loose" comes back on, and the line says "loose stars are back on the sky". If a switched-off journal's gravity filed it, that journal comes back on: "“‹name›” back on the sky". Either way there is "undo" beside the line and at the top right; undo switches it off again and the star hides again, but stays kept — then "redo" switches it back on. See Journals on the sky and Undo & earlier versions.

Gravity (Gold)

With journal gold, a journal whose gravity claims a kept entry — by a tag it carries — files it straight away, never into a journal that is closed, put away or locked. See Gravity & a journal's template (Gold).

Undo

Leave a new, empty entry and nothing is made. One already kept goes to the burn pile to take it back — "take it back" on a new star's card, or "to the burn pile" on its menu. See The reliquary & the burn pile.

Ask the sky can write one

Ask the sky — the built-in AI assistant — can write a new entry on a day you name, today when you don't, with a title and words. See What the sky can do — entries & journals.
