Words, titles & pages

How-to

The "words" tab of compose holds an entry's title and its pages of writing. Compose is the one screen where entries are written — see Compose, top to bottom.

Write

  • "what to call it" — the title.
  • "what happened" — the first page's words. A blank line between lines starts a new paragraph.

An entry with only a title is a real entry; empty words make nothing.

Pages

  • "✛ a new page" sits under every page. It adds a blank page right after the one you tap it under.
  • Each later page shows "— page 2 —" and so on, with "the page's title" and "the words of this page".
  • "remove this page" — not on the first page. Its words, its files and its pop-ups join the page before; nothing is lost. The line says "the page is gone", with "undo" — and the "undo" button at the top right, which then offers "redo". See Undo & earlier versions.

In the reader, page breaks show as headings.

Another app's words

An entry another app wrote shows that app's own lines under "written by <app> · kept as it is". You can't edit those, but you can add your own words.

Files placed in a page

A file placed in the words shows under its page with its glyph: ▣ picture, ▶ video, ♪ sound, ▤ other.

To place one: open the "materials" tab and tap "place in the words" on the file. It goes to the end of the last page, named after the file, and is no longer offered there. If you later remove that page, the placed file moves to the page before. See Photos, files & voice notes.

The only way to take a placed file back out of the words is "remove" on the file, which also takes it off the entry.

Pop-ups

Words that open a pop-up are underlined as you write, the way the reader draws them. Under the words, "pop-ups" lists each one. See Pop-ups.

Saving

What you type here waits for "save", or for you to leave compose — and leaving saves it. Each save keeps the words before as an earlier version. See Save & earlier versions.

Ask the sky can write here

Ask the sky can change an entry's title, the words of one page, add a page or remove one, and place one of its files in the words. The words as they were go into the entry's history. See What the sky can do — entries & journals.
