The reliquary & the burn pile
Two places a thing goes when it leaves the desk. Put away sends it to the reliquary — kept whole, out of sight, back by hand. The burn pile holds what you deleted for thirty days, then destroys it; until then you can pull it back. Both are shelves of the escritoire.
Put away
| what | how | what happens |
|---|---|---|
| an entry | its ⋯ menu › "put it away" | it leaves the sky and the list, and stays in every journal that holds it: "into the reliquary · it keeps every word", with "undo" |
| a loose page | "▤ put away" on its row | the same |
| a journal | its page › ⋯ › "off the desk" › "put it away" | it leaves the desk, and its constellation leaves the sky. Its entries stay where they are: "into the reliquary · every entry stays", with "undo" |
| a journal | on the escritoire, drag its plate onto ▤ "put it away" | the same |
Nothing loses a word, a picture, a version or a drawn line. A put-away journal takes nothing new: "this journal is put away — set it out to add anything".
Each notice has "undo"; once undone, the "undo" button in the top corner turns into "redo". See Undo & earlier versions.
A journal's ⋯ menu has no "set it out" line. To bring a journal back, use the reliquary shelf, below.
With "the reliquary in the sky" on, put-away journals draw in the sky as ghosts — dashed lines and a ▤ beside the name. See Journals on the sky.
The reliquary shelf
On the escritoire, tap ▣ "shelves" until it shows, or hold ▣ and pick "the reliquary". Its row says "n journals · n entries · kept whole", or "nothing in it · what goes here is kept whole".
- "journals · n" / "entries · n" switch between the two halves.
- Journals — plates, newest put away first. Tap to bring one forward, again to go in. Hold one and drag it onto ▤ "set it out" — "“…” is back on the desk", with "undo", and "redo" once undone — or onto ❋ "the burn pile".
- Entries — each row shows the entry's star, its title struck through, "AWAY <day>" and "SET OUT". "SET OUT" puts it back: "“…” back in the sky", with "undo", and "redo" once undone.
Empty: "the reliquary holds no journals yet. carry a journal onto ▤ at the foot of the desk and it comes here, whole." or "the reliquary holds no entries yet. an entry put here leaves the sky and the list, and stays in whatever journals held it."
Send to the burn pile
| what | how | the line |
|---|---|---|
| an entry | its ⋯ menu, or the reader's foot › "to the burn pile" | "on the burn pile · 30 days", with "undo" |
| a blank star | its card › "take it back" | "taken back · it waits in the burn pile 30 days", with "undo" |
| a journal | its page › ⋯ › "delete this journal" | "the journal is gone · its entries stay", with "undo" |
| a journal | on the escritoire, drag its plate onto ❋ "the burn pile" | "“…” on the burn pile · its entries stay", with "undo" |
| a journal | merged away on the sky's "two constellations" card — both, for "merge into new journal" | "merged · now all of …", with "undo", which pulls it back. See Make & name a journal |
There is no confirm; each has "undo" on the notice line.
- An entry leaves the sky, the list and search, and is taken out of every journal that held it. "undo" puts it back in each one, where it lay, with its lines.
- A journal's entries are never deleted with it. An entry held by no other journal becomes a loose page; one held by another journal stays filed there.
The burn pile shelf
On the escritoire, tap ▣ "shelves" until it shows, or hold ▣ and pick "the burn pile". Its row says "nothing burning", "one thing waiting · thirty days to pull it back", or "n waiting · thirty days to pull them back".
- "journals · n" / "entries · n" switch between the two halves.
- Journals — burning journals as plates, constellation and all. Empty: "no journals are burning. nothing here would be gone anyway — the pile waits thirty days, and you can pull anything back the whole time." Hold one and drag it onto ▤ "pull it back" — "OUT OF THE FIRE · BACK ONTO THE DESK, WHOLE": "“…” is out of the fire".
- Entries — each with its title struck through and "n DAYS LEFT · TAP TO PULL IT BACK". Tap the row: "“…” is back". The list scrolls, so every row can rise clear of the fire at the foot.
Pull it back
- A journal comes back with its entries and its lines.
- An entry comes back with its files, but loose — in no journal. Only the "undo" right after sending it puts it back in its journals.
Settings has the same list: settings › "files" › "the burn pile", each row with its title, the day it went and "pull it back".
Burn it now
Anything that has waited more than thirty days is deleted for good the next time the app starts. To burn sooner:
- On the shelf — the fire at the foot has "burn n journals" or "burn n entries". It burns only the half you are looking at. Tap it; it changes to "tap again — there is no undo, and nobody can get it back"; the second tap burns. Under it: "this burns the journals on this shelf. the entries are untouched." or the reverse.
- In settings — settings › "files" › "the burn pile" › "burn it all". It turns into "tap again — there is no undo"; the second tap burns both halves and says "the burn pile is out".
Nothing burned can be brought back.
Ask the sky
Ask the sky can put an entry or a journal away and set it out, send an entry or a journal to the burn pile, list what is burning with the days left, pull one thing back, and burn the pile — all of it, or only its journals or its entries. Sending to the burn pile and burning work only while "let the sky do things that cannot be undone" is on, and it asks you each time. For sending an entry or a journal to the burn pile, the ask ends "you have 30 days to pull it back." A hidden entry, or one sealed in a locked journal, is left out of its list.
