Journals on the sky

How-to

You can take one journal's constellation — its lines and name — off the sky, the home view of your entries, without changing the journal. You can also choose which journals the switch offers, and whether put-away journals show as ghosts.

The short list

  1. On the sky, tap "journals" — the book in the bottom-right corner. A row of chips opens beside it, one per journal around the stretch of sky you are looking at.
  2. Tap a journal's chip to take it off the sky: "“…” off the sky", with "undo". Tap it again to bring it back: "“…” back on the sky". "undo" also waits in the top-right corner, and once undone it offers "redo". See Undo & earlier versions.
  3. Tap the book again, or press back, to close the list. Back first closes a star's card, an entry's ⋯ menu or the ✛ choices if one is open in front.

Hold a chip to go into that journal: its page opens and its constellation draws itself. Holding "loose" opens the escritoire instead. A screen reader hears each chip end "hold to open it."

A chip shows the journal's star, its name and how many of its stars are on screen ("· 3"), or "· none here". A switched-off chip keeps its row, its star faded and its name struck through — told by shape, not colour.

"loose" is the same switch for every star in no journal.

"the escritoire ▸" closes the list and opens the escritoire, the desk where journals are made and kept. Holding the book goes there directly.

A star stays on the sky while any journal holding it is still on. What leaves is the switched-off journal's own lines and name.

Off the sky, the book goes straight to the escritoire.

A new star never vanishes

A star you have just made is never hidden the moment it is made.

  • With "loose" switched off, making a new entry in no journal — holding empty sky, letting a shuttle item go on the sky, leaving compose on a new entry, or "✛ an entry" — switches "loose" back on: "loose stars are back on the sky".
  • If a switched-off journal's gravity takes the new entry (Gold), that journal comes back on: "“‹name›” back on the sky".
  • Either way there is "undo", which switches it off again; the star stays kept, only hidden. Then "redo" in the top-right corner switches it back on.

It doesn't happen for a journal you filed the entry into yourself, for entries ask the sky writes, for things shared in from other apps, or for the example journals.

Which journals get a chip

settings › "the sky" › "show journals for":

choicewhich journals
"present stars"only journals with a star in the days on screen. This is where it starts
"current constellations"also journals whose first and last entries straddle what is on screen, even if neither end shows
"all active journals"every journal the sky can draw, even an empty one

With nothing to list, the line follows the choice: "no stars on this stretch of sky", "no journal straddles this stretch of sky" or "no journals the sky can draw". Burning journals never appear.

Ghosts — "the reliquary in the sky"

The reliquary is the shelf where put-away journals are kept whole. settings › "the sky" › "the reliquary in the sky" — also on the reliquary's own shelf page — lets them back into the sky as ghosts:

  • off (where it starts) — put-away journals keep their constellations out of the sky;
  • on — each is drawn in dashed, fainter lines, with ▤ beside its name. Its chip in the short list wears "▤ " too.

A put-away entry never draws on the sky, switch or not.
