The shelves — binder, archive & pyre

How-to
A list with one struck-through almanac name, its days left, and put back and burn buttons.
The pyre: a thrown-away almanac waits here, with "put back" and "burn".

The binder — the screen that holds your almanacs — has three shelves. An almanac is a named, coloured layer of commitments, like one calendar.

  • The binder shelf holds the almanacs on your calendar.
  • The archive holds almanacs you have retired — taken off the calendar, with everything kept.
  • The pyre holds thrown-away almanacs and commitments for thirty days, so you can pull them back.

They are one page in three states, not three screens. All three are titled "the binder" at the top left and have the same buttons in the same corners. The thin line under the title says which shelf you are on.

Change shelves

The button is "▣", a square of shelves, in the binder's bottom-left corner, under "✛ add".

Tap it to turn to the next shelf: the binder, then the archive, then the pyre, then back to the binder.

The word beside the button says where a tap goes next, not where you are:

You are onThe word reads
the binder"retired"
the archive"the pyre"
the pyre"the binder"

Hold it to jump straight to a shelf. A small menu opens with "▣ the binder", "▣ the archive" and "▣ the pyre" — minus the shelf you are on. It is always two rows, in the same order, so the row you want is always in the same place. The missing row tells you which shelf you are on.

A few details about moving between them:

  • Changing between the binder and the archive closes any sheet that was open.
  • Going to the pyre sets the page under it back to the binder shelf, so leaving the pyre lands you on the binder.
  • The pyre is drawn over the binder. From the pyre, "▣ the binder" closes it, and "▣ the archive" opens the archive as the binder comes back.

Retire an almanac to the archive

Retiring takes an almanac off the calendar and off the legend — the cluster of almanac chips on the calendar's main screen — while keeping everything: its name, colour, place and commitments.

  1. In the binder, tap the almanac once to choose it.
  2. In the strip at the foot, tap "▤ retire".

Or hold the almanac, drag it, and let go on "▤ archive it". You can also use "archive" on the almanac's own page — see An almanac's page.

An archived almanac cannot take a new commitment and cannot be the one new commitments land on. If you try, it says "it is archived — restore it first".

Put an almanac back from the archive

  1. Tap "▣" until you reach the archive, or hold "▣" and choose "▣ the archive".
  2. Tap the almanac once to choose it.
  3. In the strip at the foot, tap "▥ put back", a light block — "back onto the calendar".

It says "“‹name›” is back on the calendar". It lands at the end of the spine: while archived it held no place, so there is no old place to return to.

On the archive, the line under the title reads "archived · tap to choose · again to open". An empty archive says "nothing archived". The back gesture from the archive returns to the binder shelf rather than closing the binder.

Send something to the pyre

Three ways for an almanac:

  • Choose it in the binder, then tap "❋ pyre" in the strip — "thirty days to pull it back out".
  • Hold it, drag it, and let go on "❋ the pyre" — "THIRTY DAYS · PULL IT BACK OUT ANY TIME".
  • On its own page, tap "into the pyre" — "thirty days to change your mind".

Anything sent to the pyre is copied there first, then removed. If the copy cannot be written, nothing moves, and the app says "the pyre could not be written — nothing was dropped".

Get something back from the pyre

  1. Tap "▣" until you reach the pyre, or hold "▣" and choose "▣ the pyre". The line under the title reads "the pyre · nothing here is gone yet, 30 days to pull it back".
  2. Choose a side: "almanacs · ‹n›" or "commitments · ‹n›".
  3. Find the row. Each row is struck through and says "‹n› day(s) left", or "gone today".
  4. Tap "put back". It says "“‹name›” is back".

If a commitment's almanac went to the pyre too, it says "its almanac is gone — put that back first". Put the almanac back, then the commitment.

An empty side says "no almanacs are burning." or "no commitments are burning.".

Burn something for good

Things in the pyre wait thirty days. To remove one sooner and for good:

  1. On its row in the pyre, tap "burn". It turns into "sure? gone for good".
  2. Tap it again within a few seconds. It says "“‹name›” is gone".

If you wait, the word disarms itself. At the foot of each side, "burn all ‹n› almanac(s)" or "burn all ‹n› commitment(s)" works the same way, with two taps.

Only that second, deliberate burn is final. Nothing else on the pyre destroys anything.

The calendar always keeps one almanac

You cannot delete your last almanac, from any door — its page, the binder, the "edit this almanac" dialog, or the assistant, which answers "the last almanac stays". On its page it says "the calendar always keeps one almanac". In the binder, the copy already made in the pyre is taken back out, so no twin is left behind, and the message says which rule stopped it.

A locked almanac cannot be retired or sent to the pyre either — see The lock.
