Undo & earlier versions
Four things keep your work safe: the "undo" on the notice line, the "undo" button in the top right corner, the earlier versions every save keeps, and the burn pile's thirty days.
"undo" on the notice line
After many actions, a short line at the foot says what happened, with "undo" beside it for four seconds. Tap "undo" while it shows to take the action back. It goes sooner if you move to another screen.
The "undo" button
After you do something that can be taken back, a curled arrow marked "undo" appears in the top right corner, left of "AI" and "shuttle". It shows on the sky, the list, the orbits and insights, the escritoire, a journal's page, and the top line of compose, design and bring to life. While there is nothing to take back, it isn't there at all.
- Tap "undo" and the thing goes back. The line at the foot says what was done, with "— undone" after it.
- When it can be done again, the button turns into "redo". Tap it and it is done again ("— done again"), and the button turns back into "undo". Otherwise the button goes.
- It is one step, not a history. Doing something else that can be undone takes its place.
- It belongs to the screen you are on. Leaving that screen takes it away.
- It is the same step as the notice line's "undo", so pressing either one undoes once.
- Hold it and it says what it undoes.
What offers undo
- connecting two stars — the line goes, and the star you connected leaves that journal
- merging two constellations — "merged · now all of …"
- moving an entry to another day, or carrying a star to a new day or height
- putting an entry in a journal or taking it out — it goes back where it lay, with its lines
- an entry's star and colour
- tying and untying
- putting away and setting out
- sending an entry to the burn pile, and deleting a journal
- hiding an entry
- switching a journal off the sky, or back on
- a new star switching "loose", or its journal, back on — "loose stars are back on the sky"
- ignoring an "also about" word, or letting it back
- removing a pop-up, or an extra header
- removing a file or a page in compose
- taking a box or a slide away in design
- "take this moment away" and "still again" in bring to life, and a caption laid down or taken out
- every drop from the shuttle
What can be redone — switching a journal off the sky or back on, a new star switching "loose" or its journal back on, putting away and setting out, ignoring an "also about" word, removing a pop-up, and the removals in compose, design and bring to life.
What has no undo line
- making a journal, renaming it, reordering the desk, closing or reopening it — do the opposite by hand
- a journal's star and colour — choose again
- gravity filing — take the entry out by hand
- the rest of design — crop and mask, slide backgrounds and the like — and the rest of bring to life — move things back by hand, or bring back the earlier version that leaving keeps (below)
- burning the burn pile — nothing burned comes back
Earlier versions
Every save keeps the words it replaces as an earlier version. An entry that was empty keeps none. Leaving design or bring to life, when you changed something, keeps the entry as it was as an earlier version the same way.
- Open the entry in compose.
- Tap "edited · one earlier version" — or "edited · N earlier versions". The history opens, newest first, each with its day, time and title. The same line now reads "hide the history".
- Tap a version to read it, then tap "bring this back".
Anything you typed and didn't save is saved first, so it joins the history too. The line says "brought back · what it replaced is kept in the history". Pop-ups, the place, the star, the colour and the filed day are not part of a version and stay as they are.
The reader shows earlier versions too, under "edited · … · read them", but only to read. See Save & earlier versions.
The burn pile
Nothing you delete goes at once. An entry or a journal waits on the burn pile thirty days, and can be pulled back whole the whole time. See The reliquary & the burn pile.
