The reader
The reader shows one entry as it was made: its words, its slides or its scenes, its files and pop-ups. Reading is free, for anybody's entry. It never edits.
Open it
- "read" on a star's card, or ◉ with latched buttons;
- "read" on a line in the list;
- "read it" on the entry's ⋯ menu, or "n earlier versions";
- a tap on an entry in a journal's page, a journal's menu, loose pages, insights or the orbits' "file in…";
- an entry it is "tied to", or a pop-up that opens another entry;
- a tap on a notice or the widget.
An entry in a locked journal opens the passphrase page instead. "‹ title" or back closes it.
On a wide screen — a folding phone opened out, a tablet — with "a wide screen" on, it opens beside the sky or the list (Gold). See Ease.
From the top
- The head — the title ("not written yet"), and a line: the day, where it came from, the time, and "in" its journals.
- "◍ <place>" — where it happened. Tap it to open a map app on the pin, or on the words. With no map app: "nothing on this phone opens a map".
- Extra headers — one line for each of its journals' extra headers that has something in it, such as "mood · calm". A link opens. See Extra headers.
- The views row:
- "plain" — the words; "· plain ·" while showing.
- "styled · n" — the slides; "· styled ·" while showing. With no slides yet, "design it" opens design instead.
- "▶ play · n" — plays every scene. With slides but no scenes, "bring it to life ✦" opens bring to life (Gold).
- A spoken entry — the recording comes first: "◉ said aloud · <length>", "▶ hear it" / "❚❚ pause", and "write it out". See Spoken entries & write it out.
- The slides — tap the right half for the next, the left half for the one before, or swipe. Dots and "n of n" under them, and "design it".
- The words — page breaks as headings, placed pictures where they were placed, other files as a line with glyph, name and size. Empty: "nothing written yet."
- "what the underlined words open" — every pop-up as a plain line.
- "what it holds" — files not placed in the words: pictures as thumbnails, the rest as lines. Tap a file line to open it in a viewer, read only.
- Tags — "#tag".
- "also about" — subjects this entry shares with others, found rather than chosen. See "also about" below.
- "tied to" — entries tied to this one; tap to read.
- "edited · n earlier versions · read them" / "hide them" — the history, to read.
The foot
| button | what it does |
|---|---|
| "write" | opens compose on this entry |
| "in the sky" | turns the sky to the entry's day |
| "share" | opens the share page. It opens for everyone; its choices are Gold. See Share an entry (Gold) |
| "to the burn pile" | leaves, and sends the entry to the burn pile: "on the burn pile · 30 days", with "undo" |
"also about"
The journal finds these subjects by itself, from the words your entries share. Small words are never subjects — nor ones with an apostrophe, such as "i'm", "it's" and "don't".
- Tap a "◌" word and the list shows the entries about it. The reader closes, and so does the journal's page or the escritoire it was opened from, so back does what back does on the list.
- Hold a "◌" word and a small menu offers "ignore “<word>”" for each word in it. Tap one and the word goes: "“<word>” is ignored", with "undo". With a screen reader, the hold is the action "ignore a word in it".
An ignored word is in no subject anywhere — not alone, not in a pair — so it leaves the reader, insights' "by subject" and ask the sky. Ignoring "that" takes "that garden" away, and "garden" can then show on its own. A word is kept in lower case, and "I’m" and "i'm" are one word.
The list of ignored words is in settings › the journal › "also about". Type a word in "a word to leave out", then a comma or "✛ ignore “<word>”". It says "“<word>” is ignored", with "undo" — or "one word at a time." if you typed more than one. To take one back off, tap its chip: "“<word>” can be also about again", with "undo". Each of these can also be undone with the "undo" button at the top right, which then offers "redo" — see Undo & earlier versions. The list is kept on this phone and goes with every backup; keeping in step with Drive doesn't carry it.
Ask the sky can ignore a word, take one back off, or say which are ignored.
Which view it opens on
The first view it actually has, in this order: the scenes, then the slides, then the words. When it opens on the scenes, they play once as it opens — unless "scenes play as they arrive" is off or reduce motion is on. No setting changes the order.
Pop-ups
Tap underlined words — the tap has to land on the letters — and a sheet opens over the entry: a note's words, a picture, another entry with its day and "read it", a link with "open it on this phone", or a file with "open" and its name. See Pop-ups.
How it reads
Text size, width, line, paragraph and letter spacing and alignment follow settings › "ease" › "reading" and the text size for "reading". See Ease.
